SAC OBJECTS is a project by Selma Waibel in which she explores experimental working methods in knitting and develops objects using slow, manual processes. The current focus is on knitted bags which are characterized by their pleated surface structure.
Her studies in textile design form the basis for the project and have a noticeable influence on Selma's work. During her studies she early focused on the technique of knitting and the development of various surface structures. Her working method is strongly characterized by using different materials to achieve differences
in tension so the textiles develop a life of their own. In her work in knitwear, however, the so called ‘knit-weave’ technique also refers to the technique of weaving, which was another major part of her work during her studies.
The idea is to work mainly with yarn remnants that are usually unusable for industrial production and are left over due to small quantities of yarn. Selma sources these leftovers from various yarn suppliers or old knitting mills in Germany. The use of deadstock materials also means that the choice of colors can only be influenced to a limited extent, as not all colors and shades are always available. Each piece is carefully crafted on a manual knitting machine from the 1950s in her Berlin studio.
All objects follow the approach of being timeless and, above all, practical to use. This has resulted in bags that can be individualized and modified with adjustable bag handles depending on the occasion and preference.
Most of the bags are made to order so that individual color requests can be considered. For larger quantities of yarn, some bag models can also be produced in small batches.
